Of Good Report
On March 21, 1949, a new ground-floor Reading Room was opened at 588 Fifth Avenue, New York City. The Reading Room is one of three maintained in the business districts by co-operative effort of the Churches of Christ, Scientist, in the Greater New York area, and its location at the present site marks the culmination of long and persistent spiritual devotion to the accomplishment of a right objective.
Located between 47th and 48th Streets, in the building which also houses the new offices of The Christian Science Monitor, its door opens directly onto the main shopping thoroughfare. Thousands of people are constantly passing its display window, and the strollers at noontime crowd even the broad sidewalks of Fifth Avenue to the curb. Most of New York City's parades, with their millions of participants, pass in front of this building. Just to the north we find Radio City, and to the east are the new headquarters of the United Nations, bringing representatives and sightseers from all over the world. A little to the west lies the theater district.
The front of the salesroom is almost entirely of glass, allowing ample display space and offering an inviting glimpse of the beautifully designed and decorated interior. Entrance is made through the salesroom, which is soundproofed to assure quiet in the study room at the rear. Generous stock cabinets have been installed, and well-lighted display cases are conspicuously placed. Fluorescent lighting throughout provides excellent reading conditions and helps to bring out the harmony and beauty of the many-toned wall treatment. The entire first floor is air-conditioned. A small office on the same floor and a pleasant committee room in the basement complete the suite, making an ideal arrangement for placing before a large metroplitan population the opportunity to become acquainted with the truth as taught in Christian Science.
