Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (First Church).

Harrisburg's Christian Scientists dedicated their church building at Front and Woodbine Streets on Sunday, December 12, 1948, with two services. Christian Science services began in Harrisburg when three people began reading the Lesson-Sermon together in their homes in the year 1896. As others joined them, it became necessary from time to time to rent larger quarters. At Derry and Evergreen Streets, Wednesday evening testimonial meetings were begun. At 213 Walnut Street, on September 4, 1904, a Sunday School was started and a Reading Room opened. Two years later the group met in the Board of Trade Building at 112 Market Street.

Recognition as Christian Science Society, Harrisburg, a branch of The Mother Church, was granted on December 10, 1905; and on July 6, 1907, the society was recognized as First Church of Christ, Scientist, Harrisburg.

A lot was purchased at Front and Woodbine Streets on August 1, 1913, where the present Sunday School building was erected. The first service was held in it on Thanksgiving Day of 1917. The cornerstone of the present main structure was laid on May 21, 1926, and the first service was held on January 29, 1928.
