DIVINE LAW

When Christ Jesus performed the great works which have been called miracles, he was demonstrating the presence and governing power of divine law. Similar wonders had been accomplished centuries before: the sick had been healed, the dead raised; food had been multiplied, weather conditions controlled, and the law of gravitation annulled. Proof enough that he was utilizing laws which are ever available when consciousness is sufficiently spiritualized to come under their beneficent control.

Christian Science is performing many wonders in this age, and through it divine law is destined to be demonstrated as the one governing force of the universe. In fact, Christian Science is frequently defined as God's law by its Discoverer, Mary Baker Eddy. In "Miscellaneous Writings" she explains divine law explicitly where she says (p. 257), "The law of God is the law of Spirit, a moral and spiritual force of immortal and divine Mind." Because Christian Science is the law of God, it is as law, or spiritual force, that it should be comprehended and demonstrated.

Law as defined in this sense is invariable force. In fact, to be law a force must present a sequence of phenomena which cannot be interrupted or annulled. Many physical, electrical, and chemical laws— forces which closely touch the issues of human life, such as the law of gravitation in its attraction of material objects to the earth—seem to be invariable in their action. But the Scriptural marvels and present-day healings of Christian Science prove the so-called laws of matter to be general human beliefs which are set aside by the changeless forces of Spirit.
