NO BEGINNING—NO END

In answer to the question, "What is Life?" Mary Baker Eddy writes in part on page 468 of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": "Life is divine Principle, Mind, Soul, Spirit. Life is without beginning and without end. Eternity, not time, expresses the thought of Life, and time is no part of eternity."

If one is high enough above the earth, a rainbow is not an arc as it appears from the ground, but is a complete circle. Likewise life, which appears to mortal sense to have beginning and end, is seen from the mountaintop of spiritual observation to be deathless, the reflection of one divine Life without beginning or end. The unobstructed viewpoint of spiritual sense beholds no material or mental horizon to limit man's harmonious activity.

To material sense man appears to begin, as it were, on a straight line of existence. Generally he begins fairly well. But soon, believing that his living is dependent upon personal effort and intellectual wrestlings, he is found hurrying along to learn enough to earn enough to carry him to an uncertain end. What a travesty this picture is on the real man, made in God's likeness!
