My gratitude for all that Christian Science...

My gratitude for all that Christian Science has done for me and has meant to me is deep and enduring. When I was twelve years old, I was attacked by cerebral tuberculous meningitis. My uncle and guardian, who was a physician, after consultation with a medical professor at the University of Athens and with four other physicians, diagnosed my disease as fatal and incurable.

My aunt, who loved me dearly, requested my uncle to ask for the help of a Christian Science practitioner. The latter took up treatment on the condition that all medical intervention and all medical aid be given up. My uncle gladly promised this, adding that he would be happy to be "proved ten times a liar, and the girl be saved." In this hour of extreme need I remember that the practitioner asked me if I wanted to live. I could think of nothing I wanted to do more, I told him. He then explained to me that God is my Life and that nothing could touch that Life. I remember holding to this as best I could. As a result of the consecrated work of the practitioner, the symptoms peculiar to this ailment, such as headache, dyspepsia, and other ills, abated one by one, until within a month's time I was healed, although impaired vision, with one eye out of line, next tried to assert itself. The healing of this ailment took longer, but it too was completely overcome, and since that time my vision has been perfect and remains so today.

After this truly lovely proof of God's power and presence, I entered the Christian Science Sunday School and continued there until I was twenty years old.
