For over twelve years I had taken medicines prescribed by a doctor to induce sleep, and at the end of that time I found myself in a worse state of health. I was told that I must give up my work as a teacher, for medical law had sentenced me to a life of inactivity. At this time the drugs had lost their effect, and I was getting practically no sleep; in fact, I was in a state of desperation.

In this state of mind I let a friend ask a Christian Science practitioner to visit me. The practitioner referred to the spiritual creation recorded in the first chapter of Genesis and told me that I must claim my birthright as the child of God. On leaving, she asked me to dwell on "the scientific statement of being" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 468) each night until I went to sleep. This I did, and to my surprise I had the first good night's rest for many weeks. The medicines were kept in my bedroom for about six weeks, but never once during that period was there any desire to take them, although I did sometimes have wakeful periods.

Previously the calming effect of the drug had been pleasing; now Truth was gradually freeing me from worry and anxiety caused by teaching. Since then I have had much better health and have been able to carry on with teaching. Not only was I healed of the habit of taking drugs but also of the harmful and depressing aftereffects.
