When I was a child, my grandmother,...

When I was a child, my grandmother, who lived in our home, spent much time reading the Christian Science periodicals, which gave her great contentment and peace. Through her reading of the articles, her eyesight was restored, and at the age of ninety she did not wear glasses. The doctors told us she had received a second sight. While learning to read during my first school years, I sat at my grandmother's side and with her help read aloud the articles and testimonies in the periodicals, I learned to love them and to accept them as the truth.

There were no Christian Scientists or Science churches near. I attended other churches, but never joined them, knowing that Christian Science was what I wanted. When I finally visited a Science church in a distant city, I was much impressed by the inscription on the wall from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 494), "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need." I felt assured that if a problem should ever arise, help was to be had in Christian Science, and I kept a copy of Science and Health to turn to in case of need.

Twenty-five years later, after I was married, I was seriously ill with septic poisoning, I had been under the care of physicians for three months, and my sight was gone. For six weeks I had been unconscious, and the family was given no hope of my recovery. A sister, knowing of my early interest in Science, came to the house and was told that I was passing on. As she entered my room, she turned to God in prayer. The first two sentences of "the scientific statement of being" (ibid., p. 468), "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all," came to her, and she earnestly repeated them aloud. I regained consciousness and asked that the doctor be dismissed and a practitioner called. The family was willing; so my sister called the only practitioner she knew. Some of the truths I had learned years before came to my thought. In a short time I asked that "the scientific statement of being" be read to me. The family did not know where to find it, but I stretched forth my hand for the first time in weeks and said, "Give me the book." At this moment my sight returned.
