DEFENDING ONESELF

Students of Christian Science who are uniting with a branch church occasionally express perplexity over the question sometimes asked by committees interviewing new members: "How do you defend yourself daily against aggressive mental suggestion?"

Defending oneself against aggressive mental suggestion is one of the daily duties of members of The Mother Church set forth in its Manual by Mary Baker Eddy (Art. VIII, Sect. 6). Adherence to this By-Law is requisite to health, harmony, and freedom.

Although the word "suggestion" is sometimes used to mean a worthy opinion or proposal, in Christian Science it generally means erroneous thoughts which would mesmerize mankind into accepting them as true, such as the thought that there is more than one Mind, or God, and hence that evil can exist as reality. Aggressive suggestions may be presented to us audibly or inaudibly.
