My first experience in Christian Science...

My first experience in Christian Science came at a time when I was suffering from tuberculosis. Through a relation's healing of smallpox by treatment from a Christian Science practitioner many thousands of miles away, my parents were moved to ask for treatment for me. I was completely restored to health within six months, to the astonishment of the doctors, who had predicted quite the reverse. Our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, writes in Science and Health (p. 162), "I have restored what is called the lost substance of lungs, and healthy organizations have been established where disease was organic."

Some years later, when living in Bermuda, I suffered from a severe breakdown and colitis. After hearing the advice of physicians, I decided to place my full trust in Christian Science, and three days later I returned to work with no aftereffects, but feeling much the better for my experience, since it had forced me to place my life in God's care. At that time Mrs. Eddy's words (ibid., p. 167), "Only through radical reliance on Truth can scientific healing power be realized," were a spur and a support to me, and the reward was worth the struggle.

The next enemy for Truth to destroy in my experience was hay fever, and as I removed resentment and irritation from thought, a permanent healing took place. This condition took longer to eradicate than any other difficulty I have experienced, for I was reluctant to stop disliking certain persons and to see them as God's children instead. As long as my concept of man was distorted, my health was impaired, for I could not hold in thought two opposite concepts at the same time. When I finally decided to base my thinking on the perfection of God and man, then the error vanished.
