KEEP ON LOVING

[Of Special Interest to Children]

Once there was a college professor who knew a great deal about many things which people learn in schools, but almost nothing about loving his neighbor. He was proud of all his knowledge and liked to sit alone in his garden, where no one would disturb him, and think about the many things he knew. Therefore, he was not pleased when the small daughter of the new family next door spied him one day and ran towards him, calling, "Hello, man." The professor did not answer. So the child called again, "Hello, man." Still he did not reply, so she returned to her own garden.

Days rolled into months, and each day the little girl went to the edge of the professor's garden when he was there, calling joyously, "Hello, man." But the professor was thinking about all the things he knew and did not answer.

Now love may be ignored for a while, but it will always win in the end, because love is stronger than any stony heart which cries, "Leave me alone!" So after many months the professor realized how rude and unkind he had been to the little girl, and when she came the next day, calling out her radiant greeting, "Hello, man," the professor smiled and spoke and offered her a flower.
