[From the Field]

An Integral Part of Our Churches

A woman from a smaller community near by came into the Reading Room with a worn copy of the Christian Science Sentinel. She stated that she had found it in a railway depot several months earlier and had read, reread, and studied it. Later, she said, she had stumbled onto local broadcasts on Christian Science from which she gathered that Christian Science was effectual. She thought the Christian Science program the most wonderful one she had ever heard, and she and her husband, who had also become interested, tried to find other Christian Science programs on their radio. They also scanned the newspapers for anything they could find on the subject of Christian Science. She had with her newspaper clippings of some of the Lesson-Sermon excerpts, the weekly church services announcements, and the weekly advertisements of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, with lists of local Christian Science Reading Rooms, which are now running in a local newspaper.

She said her husband had told her she had better go to a Reading Room, the address of which they had learned from these clippings, and buy the textbook. She bought not only the textbook but a matching Bible and a copy of the Christian Science Quarterly.

The librarian told her about the Quarterly and how to study the Lesson-Sermon, also explaining about our church services, Sunday Schools, how to find and consult a practitioner, and giving her other information which might be helpful. The woman was much interested in hearing about our Sunday Schools and expressed her intention of enrolling her eight-year-old son.
