REFINING THE GOLD

When one is going through an experience of suffering, the experience seems very real. It seems to be a part of oneself. But Christian Science teaches that the real selfhood of each one of us never suffers. Because the real man is made in the image and likeness of God, he is never sick, never in pain, but is dwelling constantly in heaven, in the harmony of peace, health, joy, and perfection.

In proportion as one understands and realilzes this spiritual truth, the healing comes. To unite thought with God, positive Mind, and to realize that one's real being is God's perfect reflection is the remedy. Whatever forces one to rise higher spiritually and to gain a clearer view of man as God's own perfect child is a blessing.

A student of Christian Science had for several days been experiencing severe pain and inflammation in her shoulder and arm, a condition which seemed at times to become aggravated to the point where she could not sleep. As she lay there, striving to see the unreality of this error, endeavoring to remove her thought from the evidence of the senses and to lift her consciousness to God in a prayer for a clearer, dearer sense of His nearness and love, the words from a well-loved hymn came to her (Hymnal, No. 123):
