EXTRACTS FROM REPORTS of Christian Science Committees on Publication

The Press

New Jersey

During the past year, references that called for correction or amplification in regard to Christian Science were those which newspapers published largely in regard to our stand on vaccination exemption. One editor in a very fair-minded editorial questioned whether a local board of education was not taking away a precious religious right when it refused to grant the child of a Christian Science parent an exception from their rule requiring vaccination. The editor asked us for a statement of the position of the Church of Christ, Scientist, on the subject of vaccination. This was gladly given him. It was published in full.

Clippings of the article were obtained and mailed, together with an explanatory letter, to all local boards of education in the state. The letter brought some favorable response. Several boards stated that they would respect religious rights by exempting from compulsory vaccination the children of Christian Science parents, when exemption was requested.
