I should like to express my gratitude...

I should like to express my gratitude for Christian Science and for what it has done for me and my family and for what it is doing for all mankind. It has proved conclusively to me that error is nothing, and that I am in my rightful place and relation to God no matter what the material conditions may be. Through Christian Science I have learned that God provides us with the strength to carry on had win the victory over error.

While taking physical examinations for the armed forces I was rejected on three occasions. To material sense testimony the following conditions existed: probable pulmonary trouble, high blood pressure, nervousness, and hernia. An operation for the latter was recommended. One examining physician stated, "You could not stand the strain of basic training," and another doctor told me, "You will never be drafted." After each of these examinations a Christian Science practitioner was consulted and work was taken up. After a fourth examination I checked with the draft board and found that the physical requirements this time had been met, but a statement had been entered on my form which was erroneous in that it did not apply to me at all. This was corrected, and within a short time two more complete examinations were taken and passed without difficulty.

Following my induction I went through a seventeen weeks' infantry basic training course. After a brief delay for a trip home, I went overseas as an infantry replacement, joining the Eightieth Division during the Battle of the Bulge. I was assigned to a rifle company and carried a seventeen-pound weapon. During my three months in combat every phase of hardship had to be met and mastered, including three assault boat river crossings, many attacks, and several patrols.
