COMPETITION

[Of Special Interest to Young People]

When a student of Christian Science is confronted with what appears to be a problem or inharmonious condition, he immediately turns to the teachings of this Science for a solution. To those who are not acquainted with Christian Science, the demonstrations of Truth which annul the claims of evil seem miraculous. There is, however, nothing miraculous about reaping the benefits from the teachings of the Master, Christ Jesus, which are fully explained and again made practical through Mary Baker Eddy's discovery.

Jesus tells us (John 8:32), "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Christian Scientists experience this freedom as they understand in some measure that man is in reality the image of God, hence perfect, thus breaking the shackles of mortal mind and ridding themselves and others of sin and disease.

Honest competition is a healthy means for promoting human progress; it is the distorted sense of competition that is injurious, because it is based on the erroneous belief of mortals that man must compete and struggle for all that he needs, and this, sometimes, at the expense of his fellow man. Mrs. Eddy writes as follows in her Message to The Mother Church for 1902 (p. 4): "Competition in commerce, deceit in councils, dishonor in nations, dishonesty in trusts, begin with 'Who shall be greatest?"
