PECK OPEN YOUR SHELL

"Mortals must emerge from this notion of material life as all-in-all. They must peck open their shells with Christian Science, and look outward and upward." So writes Mary Baker Eddy on page 552 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures."

The world presented by materiality's self-constituted senses—seeing, hearing, and so on—is limited and imperfect. But Christian Science challenges the alleged world of the senses, declares it untrue, and reveals instead a noble, lovely, supremely satisfying realm governed by Mind and its beneficent, invincible laws. This realm is not cognized by the material senses. The Bible invitation, "O taste and see that the Lord is good" (Ps. 34:8), can be accepted only through the use of spiritual sense.

The world of the material senses, then, is the shell which needs to be pecked open. Every mortal seems to be enclosed in a different shell from that of his brother. Each of us lives in a dream world of his own. We all have different neighbors, different work, different prospects, different kinds of homes, habits, problems, inclinations. Often we enterain a markedly different concept of a friend than does an acquaintance.
