THIS IS PRAYER

Father, teach all men to know
That prayer is more than bended knee,
The head bowed low
On folded hands;

That prayer is more than this:
The sinner saved,
The sick one healed,
The enemy turned friend
Through gracious loving.

True prayer is keeping joy
No matter what the voice of sense
Would try to say:

The seeking, and the striving,
And the holding on,
The drinking all of it,
The "Thank You" whispered low.
Father, this is prayer;
Teach men to know.
