I give this testimony in the hope...

I give this testimony in the hope that it may help someone who is not finding it easy to overcome a physical problem.

In 1936 I was gravely ill with tuberculosis. The doctor had given me a bad report, saying I had a fifty-fifty chance of recovery, provided only that I was given the finest conditions possible. It was then that I turned to Christian Science. I read about many wonderful healings and thought, If these people can have such healings, why shouldn't I? I asked for help from a practitioner. It was lovingly given for about two months with apparently little or no result. I began to get very much discouraged. I was living in London at the time, and I then moved out into the country. I still clung to the hope that Christian Science would help me, since there seemed little else to hope for. I read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy from cover to cover twice but could understand very little of it.

Then quite suddenly one day I realized that I had been seeking a healing in this Science solely because it offered the quickest way to get well again, and I had been watching my body daily for a physical healing. I realized that this was not the way in Christian Science. I knew I must look away from the body and seek an understanding of man's relationship to God. This was not always easy to do.
