Signs of the Times

We Must Go Forward

Frank Martin Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds, England

Never look back. Vain regrets either for past happiness or for past failings are like the ball and chain attached to the leg of a prisoner. There is a wonderful truth in the legend of Lot's wife, who turned back to look at her former home when she was escaping from the destruction of the cities of the plain, and was turned into a pillar of salt.

Those who live in their past are paralyzed. It is good to have happy memories. It is right to feel sorrow for past weakness and failings. But the future can still be far better than the past. "God is love," and His mercies are new every day. If you expect His goodness, and look eagerly for it, you will find it. Life at any age can be an adventure.
