CHRISTIAN SCIENCE OPENS OUR EYES

We often hear the remark, "It certainly opened my eyes!" The reference is always to something that makes us understand things more clearly. Those of us who have taken up the study of Christian Science are every day seeing more clearly the true nature of being, for we are having our eyes opened to the truth of man's harmonious and eternal relationship to God. This opening of the eyes can be accomplished without physical effort. We need not lift the lids of our eyes to see the truth. We need no material light to recognize the divine kinship of perfect God and perfect man.

A familiar Biblical instance in which eyes were opened to perceive the truth is found in II Kings, when the young servant of Elisha became fearful upon seeing the enemy surrounding the city. Elisha in his great wisdom told the young man not to be afraid. And then he prayed thus (II Kings 6:17): "Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see." We read that God did open the young man's eyes and he saw that "the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha." It was not for the physical opening of the young man's eyes that Elisha prayed, but for the unfolding of his understanding, that he might lose his fear and discern the glory of God and His might.

Mary Baker Eddy, speaking of Christ Jesus, writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" p. 38): "To those buried in the belief of sin and self, living only for pleasure or the gratification of the senses, he said in substance: Having eyes ye see not, and having ears ye hear not; lest ye should understand and be converted, and I might heal you. He taught that the material senses shut out Truth and its healing power."
