For nearly thirty years I had...
For nearly thirty years I had intermittent severe attacks of rheumatic gout, often having to hire a conveyance to take me to and from business. These attacks came on without warning and left me unable to walk. I will not dwell upon my sufferings, or the awful time I gave my wife by my irritability. One day I was taken to a service at the Christian Science church in Auckland, New Zealand, and when about six months afterwards I had one of my worst attacks, I called up a practitioner, who came to the house. When he told me, amongst other things, that there is no reality in pain, and was not a bit interested in the details of my swollen and inflamed foot, I thought he was mad. He said, "I know what you are thinking, and I don't blame you."
It was Saturday, and on leaving he said that he would expect to see me at the church service on the morrow. He called again on Monday and asked me why I was not at church. My wife and I both told him that I was suffering more than ever on Sunday, and three times had nearly fainted with the pain. We had another talk, and when he was about to leave he said, "Come as far as the door and see me off, and you will not need them." He evidently read my thoughts, for my crutch and stick were behind the couch on which I was lying and were well out of sight. Then he said something which I have never forgotten: "Be not afraid; you walk with God." With his assistance I made the effort to rise, and though I don't know how I did it, I went to the door and down six concrete steps and around to the side gate. He did not utter one word of surprise.
However, when he had gone up the road I thought, How will I get back without my crutch and stick? But the words came back to me, "Be not afraid: you walk with God." I got back without difficulty and have never had to use these aids since. This healing occurred just fourteen years ago. Three days later I went back to my office and shortly afterwards removed to Brisbane, Australia. Since that healing neither my wife nor I have taken medicine of any sort and, with the exception of minor ailments, have kept wonderfully well.
