When we turn to God for guidance, not only are we led into the right path, but we are also constantly protected. Having attended a Christian Science Sunday School, where I received a firm foundation in the things of the Spirit, since I was six years old, I entered the Army with the consciousness of God's ever-presence. Step by step, obstacles were overcome through the study and application of this precious truth. Injections, which are a necessary part of the Army routine, were taken without any ill effects. While I was taking a physical examination to become an aviation cadet, an X ray disclosed an enlargement of the heart. The thought came to me that in truth the only sense of enlarged heart there could be was one enlarged with love. I was healed of the difficulty within three days by turning completely to God in prayer as we are taught in Christian Science, and by continuous study of the textbook.

After receiving my commission as a bomber navigator, I was sent overseas. While on a bombing mission over Germany, our plane was badly hit and began to flame. I tried as best as I could quietly to realize the truth amidst all the fear and confusion, and after some flying down the coast of Holland, we were forced to abandon ship. At the height of thirty-five hundred feet, I parachuted down, all the while being shot at by the enemy, then occupying Holland. I cried out, "Dear God, I am in Your tender care," and repeated Mrs. Eddy's statement from Science and Health (p. 571), "Clad in the panoply of Love, human hatred cannot reach you." I landed safely in a country field in Holland.

I was hidden in a cellar for the night by the kindly Hollanders, and protected when the Germans were within a hundred yards of where I was. I finally got in touch with the Dutch Underground, a haven was found for me with a fine family, and I was given a small room for myself. I stayed in this room for seven months, during which time I had the opportunity of reading my service edition of the Bible and of Science and Health, a gift from my mother before I left, which I had carried with me in the pockets of my shirt. I read the Bible and the textbook through three times.
