"As birds flying"

All through the Bible we find the great spiritual characters using some familiar illustration to bring out the truth they wish to teach. Jesus used the same method. He spoke of the birds, the trees, the flowers, seedtime and harvest, related stories of interest to his hearers, but in all his parables and teaching he brought out a metaphysical lesson which, if accepted, leads to comfort, well-being, and healing—the kingdom of heaven within. There was greatness in the simplicity of his message.

Several years ago a student of Christian Science received a message saying that the life of a loved one was despaired of. Remembering that the Lesson-Sermons contain spiritual food to bless, heal, and meet the human need, this student turned at once to the Christian Science Quarterly' for inspiration. The Golden Text for that week's Lesson was from Isaiah (31:5): "As birds flying, so will the Lord of hosts defend Jerusalem; defending also he will deliver it; and passing over he will preserve it."

"As birds flying" conveyed to her thought a sense of poise, beauty, grace, ease, swiftness, direction, courage, fearlessness, and freedom. Then she saw that the soaring flight of birds is typical of exalted thoughts, thoughts lifted from the earth, released from fear and false material sense testimony, which rise into the heights and freedom of spiritual reality.
