I shall always be sincerely...

I shall always be sincerely grateful to our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, for Christian Science.

In the latter part of 1934, I became ill and very fearful. Medical science diagnosed the difficulty as cancer. Everything possible was done for me. An operation was performed, but the resulting state was worse than the original one, and no hope was given for my recovery. I remained in a semiconscious condition for a number of days. During this time I had asked to see a woman whom I knew to be a Christian Scientist. This request was not granted at the time, but when I lapsed into a state of coma, and seemed near death, a member of my family remembered my wish and called a Christian Scientist. One of my nurses was kind enough to allow her five minutes in the room. At that time no one was allowed to see me.

I was told that "God is Life," that nothing can happen to my life, and that "God is present here and now in this room." At once my hope was renewed, my vision became clear, and though I did not speak, the burden of false beliefs and conflicting human opinions was lifted. When the nurse came back into the room, I smiled at her. She noticed the change and asked the woman, "What have you done for my patient?" She invited the welcome visitor to stay as long as she wished, and then reported to my family, who were waiting for the "bad news," the good tidings that the patient was smiling.
