Unconditional Surrender

We have in recent years become accustomed to think of the mandate "unconditional surrender" in its military implications. But do we hear the unmistakable call of God persistently demanding of us, individually, unconditional surrender—relinquishment of all error, repudiation of everything unlike Himself?

Unconditional surrender permits no compromise, reservation, or withholding. It is the laying down of all temporal values. Every hour Truth is demanding of mankind complete surrender, the capitulation of destructive mental weapons, such as fear, envy, distrust, criticism, condemnation, which are enemies of civilization and devastating to peace, harmony, health, and security. That which demands and supplies materiel of war is the carnal mind, which, as the Apostle Paul said, "is enmity against God."

In the degree that men banish delusive sense, with its contradictory arguments, and acknowledge the supremacy of God, good, as the only Mind, they lose the false estimate of materiality and gain victory over evil. In "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 15) our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, says: "The new birth is not the work of a moment. It begins with moments, and goes on with years; moments of surrender to God, of childlike trust and joyful adoption of good; moments of self-abnegation, self-consecration, heaven-born hope, and spiritual love."
