Comfort—God's Promise

The beautiful promise of Jesus as recorded in the Gospel of John (14:16, 17), "I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth," is fulfilled today through Christian Science, which heals all manner of ills, including the belief in that last enemy called death. Even in what seems to be one's darkest hour, the tender Christ is present, and although the heart may turn ever so feebly toward the light, that smallest effort is rewarded.

Mary Baker Eddy, the revered Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes in "The First Church of Christ. Scientist, and Miscellany" (pp. 149, 150): "Remember, thou canst be brought into no condition, be it ever so severe, where Love has not been before thee and where its tender lesson is not awaiting thee. Therefore despair not nor murmur, for that which seeketh to save, to heal, and to deliver, will guide thee, if thou seekest this guidance."

In Revelation (3:20) we have another promise: "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me." This is the sacred experience of all who turn to the Christ for reassurance. All that needs to be done is to open the door of consciousness to the Christ. When a loved friend stands at our door, do we timidly open it just a tiny crack? Rather do we not fling it wide to receive the welcome guest?
