When Christian Science was...

When Christian Science was first brought to my notice a good many years ago, I adopted a very antagonistic attitude towards it. However, following World War I, I passed through a very distressing period of unemployment and lack. I had tried every avenue I could think of to obtain work, without success, when a friend invited me to accompany him to a Christian Science lecture. Having nothing else to do, I agreed to go. I paid little heed to the lecture, but I was impressed by the fact that the hall was full of business people. I was fortunate in being introduced to a Christian Science practitioner, and later called to see him. Within a few hours of this interview I met in the street an acquaintance whom I had not seen for years, and he told me of a place where I obtained employment.

Since that time I have maintained progress, and though there have been times of anxiety, the understanding of Christian Science as taught in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, has invariably met the problem. During one or two periods of unemployment my needs were supplied and the way for improvement opened up.

I am increasingly grateful for the release from bondage to the smoking and social drinking habits. I was fearful at first lest I should lose friends and pleasures to which I had been accustomed for so many years. On the contrary I found social life and friendships very much more worth while and enjoyable.
