Thought and Action

[Of Special Interest to Young People]

We often find in our passage from sense to Soul that we are guided through one Red Sea of error only to become engulfed in another. This may happen even though we are praying for right direction. In dealing with such a situation, we shall do well to recall a significant sentence on page 550 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. It reads, "Error of thought is reflected in error of action."

We see from this statement the relatedness of thought and action. It is quite possible that our thinking may have been so clarified and spiritualized in one direction that our actions in that department of living have been correctly governed without conscious effort. But, because we have not yet perceived all of Truth, we may find in other directions greater difficulty in bringing our thoughts and actions into obedience to Principle. In this case we need to examine our thinking more closely to see why it has led to wrong action, and discover what about it has been erroneous and needs to be corrected.

Often, when the error has been uncovered, we may be surprised that we had not been awake to it all along, and we may frequently find that we had allowed ourselves to be erroneously influenced by evil suggestions or human persons. Our Church Manual by Mrs. Eddy, under "A Rule for Motives and Acts" (Art. VIII, Sect. 1), warns us to be on guard daily against these phases of evil.
