Letters to the Press from Christian Science Committees on Publication

Contra Costa County Labor Journal

James A. Vincent, Committee on Publication for Northern California Contra Costa County Labor Journal

Your recent issue includes a letter from one of the paper's readers in which he speaks of the opposition of Christian Scientists to the Wagner-Murray-Dingell bill. This bill would establish, among other things, a system of compulsory insurance for medical care.

It would not be in accordance with the religion of Christian Science to obstruct any measure that would promote the health and well-being of mankind. But the mere statement of the sponsors of some new legislation that it will promote such health and well-being does not necessarily put it in that classification. Methods of healing vary, and a question of religious freedom is concerned where a compulsory tax is set up for the support of some one method of healing. Also, even if citizens feel that they want that method, there is the question of whether it is right for the government to compel the citizens to take out insurance for the purpose of supplying that method.
