Now that the war has drawn to...

Now that the war has drawn to a close, it is with a deep sense of gratitude to God that I look back over the past five years and realize the wonderful protection we had whilst living and working in London. Each member of our family tried to put into practice the teachings of Christian Science, and, as we turned to the ninety-first Psalm for strength and assurance on retiring for the night, we knew we could rest safely in divine Love.

"The scientific statement of being," which is to be found onpage 468 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, gives one a sense of calm assurance and bears much fruit when studied conscientiously. I should like to tell of an experience which shows its protective power in time of danger.

While the branch church of which my wife and I are members was preparing for a Christian Science lecture, a German V-2 rocket fell close to the block of flats in which we live. It came without any warning at half past one in the morning, just seven days before the lecture. My wife and I found ourselves standing beside our bed amid a scene of great material destruction, both of us shouting aloud "the scientific statement of being" to which I have referred. When we came to the end of it there was a complete silence. We called to our two sons, aged nine and twelve, and their replies came, reassuring and confident. We were so grateful for their lack of fear. They were strong and obedient throughout, and the teaching they had received in the Christian Science Sunday School supported them in their hour of need.
