Persistence Alone Wins

Surely the story of Abraham is an inspiring illustration of persistent adherence to ever-present Truth. Surely, also, each one of us. lovingly drawn by the healing truth, as presented to the world in this age by Christian Science, may steadfastly maintain confident trust therein and pursue his course Spiritward with wholehearted devotion. Once he has begun this spiritual journey, one cannot go back to materiality. Said Simon Peter to Jesus (John 6:68). "To whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life."

According to the narrative in Genesis, Abraham waited a quarter of a century for the fulfillment of the promise that to him would be born a son through whom God would establish His covenant of a new and blessed inheritance. Although tempted first to fear that his steward Eliezer might have the inheritance, then later to desire that Ishmael, the child of the bondwoman, be accepted as his heir, yet the patriarch was ever responsive to the angel thought which reassured him that God's promise would be fulfilled. God had said that the covenant would be established with Isaac, the son of promise (see Genesis 17:21).

Coming out from a land of idol worshipers and repudiating forever their false gods. Abraham continually turned to the one God. He was obedient to God's command and promise (Gen. 12:1,2), "Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: and I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee." And his persistent faith was rewarded.
