[Original testimony in German]

I should like to express my boundless gratitude for the rich blessings and help given us by Christian Science in all human experiences, even the most distressing. In the words of the Psalmist (Ps. 21:5), "Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:...my cup runneth over." I have experienced and proved the truth of these words.

In March, 1945, I was taken prisoner as a German soldier by the American forces. Together with many other German soldiers, I was removed by a long, trying train journey, with the difficulties always involved in such movements, to a prisoner-of-war camp in northern France.

At first I was in despair at the evil which had filled my experience. I felt that I was in one of the most desolate situations that mortal mind can imagine. All contact with my parents and relatives had been completely cut off by the war, so that I had been without any news of them for three months, and they knew nothing about me. In the meantime what remained of my home town had been taken, and there was no possibility of contact with it for an indefinite period. All property and every possession was lost. A very deep sense of depression was manifested in bodily sickness.
