Our Pattern, the Christ

The character of Christ Jesus has been as a great light through centuries of materiality and suffering, arousing dulled human minds to a love for good. The power of his example remains undimmed. Indeed, our clearest concept of the unlimited tenderness and bounty of God comes from the life of our Master. So it is not surprising that throughout the Christian era occasional healings have followed the intuitive recognition of the reality of good as demonstrated by Christ Jesus, and that earnest Christians have set before themselves the character of the Master as their pattern.

Mary Baker Eddy says in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 259), "The divine nature was best expressed in Christ Jesus, who threw upon mortals the truer reflection of God and lifted their lives higher than their poor thought-models would allow, —thoughts which presented man as fallen, sick, sinning, and dying"

As the result of Mrs. Eddy's great spirituality and deep love for Christ Jesus she became the revelator of Christian Science, which makes plain and available the healing and purifying power of the Christ-example. We learn how this power may become more active in our lives. Through our study of Science, the Christlike nature is becoming better understood as the true nature of man, to be claimed and proved by all men, just as Jesus proved it. With more assurance we set to work to clarify our own "thought-models"' until, like the Master, we recognize perfect God and perfect man as the reality of existence.
