In 1916, after ten weeks of doctoring...

In 1916, after ten weeks of doctoring and a hospital experience, I turned unreservedly to Christian Science, feeling certain that if I were faithful it would heal me. I never had any doubt about God's willingness to heal, but I was afraid and doubtful about my ability to receive the healing. As a consequence I resolved to do my part without wavering, that is, dispense with all material medicines, read faithfully the Christian Science textbook. Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy, and trust God to do His part. At first the reading was difficult, for the arguments persisted that I was too weak to study and that I did not understand what I was reading. However, I had taken my stand for Science and day after day I read. Gradually I became stronger. In a few weeks I was fully restored to health.

This experience grounded me firmly in loyalty to the teachings of Christian Science. My complete healing resulted in a much improved appearance. Skinny arms and legs were properly filled out, and fear which had seemed as much a part of my make-up as the thin arms, gave place to a restful sense of divine Love's protection and care.

During the influenza epidemic a few years later, with the help of Christian Science practitioners at different times, I recovered from this disease and, in the presence of circumstances under which doctors said mothers could not survive, gave birth to a lovely little girl. The doctor in attendance announced to my practitioner that the baby was perfect and the mother was doing nicely.
