Change the Picture

A Child who lay sleeping in harmonious, peaceful surroundings, suddenly cried out in great fear, dreaming that a ferocious beast was attacking her. What could be done to protect and save her? Could anyone attack the beast and thus free the child from its cruelty? No, the only remedy was to awaken the child.

By awakening she simply exchanged an unreal, unhappy picture for her normal surroundings. Then she nestled close in her mother's arms, fearless and at peace. Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Christian Healing" (pp. 9, 10): "God made all that was made, but He never made sin or sickness, either an error of mind or of body. Life in matter is a dream: sin. sickness, and death are this dream. Life is Spirit; and when we waken from the dream of life in matter, we shall learn this grand truth of being. St. John saw the vision of life in matter; and he saw it pass away,—an illusion."

Does this not mean that diseased beliefs are no more real than was the animal in the child's dream, and that we too can awaken to the fact that man is always a spiritual idea of God dwelling in His perfect kingdom?
