The Intelligence of Man

"And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.... So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them." This record of spiritual creation is fundamental to the teachings of Christian Science.

In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 587), Mary Baker Eddy has given us a remarkable definition of God, remarkable in that it is the basis for Christian Science treatment in all kinds of problems: "God. The great I am; the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal; Principle; Mind; Soul; Spirit; Life; Truth; Love; all substance; intelligence."

From early childhood we are judged according to the intelligence we express. The infant's actions are closely observed, and he is said to be bright, fairly bright, or stupid; and from this basis his future is predicted. He reaches the kindergarten age, and again his degree of intelligence is estimated.
