No More Jonahs!

When one reads the Bible in the light of the teachings of Christian Science, how alive become the characters depicted therein, how paralleled with ours their experiences, trials, and triumphs! Mary Baker Eddy discovered the Science of Christianity in the Holy Scriptures when through rare inspiration she was enabled to read the sacred pages and to discern their spiritual, scientific message. The words and works of Christ Jesus took on new meaning for her when Truth began to lift the mists of a matter-ridden theology, and enabled her to see the great Teacher of Nazareth not as a remote wonder-worker, but as the greatest and most practical Way shower out of evil and discord the world has ever known.

Through Mrs. Eddy's sublime revelation, her students and followers now joyously feel a nearness to the great Nazarene which enables them to turn to him and his teachings as one would to a wise and understanding elder brother. Did not Jesus recognize and embrace as brethren all who did the will of the Father? The Christian Scientist, therefore, does not worship Jesus as God, but strives to follow him as the Son of God as the friend, brother, and Teacher who knew how to heal sickness, transform sinful lives, overcome lack, and usher in the kingdom of law and harmony on earth.

With keen interest the student of scientific Christianity traces the human footsteps taken by the man of Nazareth in his exemplification of the Christ-method of deliverance from error. Mrs. Eddy has written: "My students need to search the Scriptures and 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,' to understand the personal Jesus' labor in the flesh for their salvation: they need to do this even to understand my works, their motives, aims, and tendency" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 214). In like manner, with their newfound illumination do they search the older Scriptures for fresh light on familiar but often spiritually obscure Biblical narratives.
