With deep gratitude for all that...
With deep gratitude for all that Christian Science has done for me, I should like to relate how I was led to it, in a heartfelt desire to point out the way of salvation to anyone in a similar situation.
When I was six years old I had various children's diseases. Later, from time to time, I ran a very high fever, for which the doctor found no cause. The attacks increased and I became gravely ill. The medical diagnosis was tuberculosis in the last stages. For four months I was in "the valley of the shadow of death."
The time finally came when I had to decide to trust myself wholly to God, Spirit, and His laws. All material aids had been exhausted, and the physician who was then caring for me said he had done everything which could be done. One hip was drawn out of its normal position. The leg had within a year become shorter by some centimeters. The joints had become ossified and quite stiff. These were but part of all the sufferings declared incurable. Times without number I prayed to God: "I will not let thee go, except thou bless me." Christian Science had often been mentioned to me, but I rejected it, for my pastor had warned us against this doctrine.
"The darkest hour precedes the dawn." I prayed humbly: "'Not my will, but thine be done,' Father! I am ready to take the way of Christian Science if it is the right one." It has been proved to me that it is the only way for me and for all who are ready to leave all for Christ. I did turn to Christian Science, and the faithful work of the practitioner who helped me brought quick relief from pain. Confidence, courage, and strength returned to my consciousness, so that my condition improved daily.
This improvement impelled me to read the textbook myself every free moment and to study the weekly Lesson-Sermons. The Herald and Hymnal were my indispensable friends. I began the study of the English language and went to England for a year. In this way it was possible for me to study the other writings of our beloved Leader. Class instruction and membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church have been great privileges and rich blessings, for which words are inadequate to express my deep gratitude.
During the past fifteen years God has been my only physician, source of supply, and counselor, and Mind my only medicine. I could not imagine what life would be without this divine Science. I have never since spent a day in bed or been unable to take care of my daily duties.
To be sure, I have had to make many demonstrations of Truth's healing power. Among other blessings I have received, stiff and dislocated joints were made supple again and resumed their right position, as have also displaced organs. Chronic varicose veins were healed instantly and completely when at a time of accident a radical stand for Truth was taken. Also in my family I have seen wonderful proofs of divine provision.
I think with sincere love of all that Mrs. Eddy has done for mankind. Honor is due our Father-Mother, God.—(Miss) Emma-Berta Sommer, Zurich, Switzerland.
