Only through radical reliance on...
"Only through radical reliance on Truth can scientific healing power be realized," is a statement by our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, on page 167 of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." I happily state that when a testing time arrived for my wife and me, we were able to prove the truth of this statement.
As result of an automobile collision which destroyed our car, we found ourselves badly shocked as well as crippled. Passing motorists first on the scene were Christian Scientists from a near-by town, who discerned our desire to avoid being taken to a hospital or to have medical aid, and volunteered to guide the ambulance in which we were placed to a practitioner's home. The practitioner was away, but Love led us to the home of a member of a branch church who had formerly been a trained nurse, and she was able capably and lovingly to minister to our physical needs.
In addition to shock, the picture presented was fractured skull and smashed ribs. Besides this, I had a dislocated shoulder or broken arm, and my wife had a wound on the hip from forceful contact with the bituminous roadway. Lacerations on both of us were also in evidence. At no time did we for a moment consider medical help. Our steadfast affirmations of the truth that "accidents are unknown to God" and that "under divine Providence there can be no accidents" (ibid., p. 424) sustained us, and then help was sought for us from practitioners in a city more than a thousand miles away. We were unable even to talk to them on the telephone, but help was lovingly and effectively given.
