Truth's Voice
In that wonderful prayer for his disciples on the eve of his betrayal, Jesus prayed, "I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil." In the light of Christian Science, it would appear that Jesus prayed that his followers might be kept from believing in evil as a reality. In that day, as in ours, suggestions of evil must continually have been encountered; but the teachings of the Master had supplied his followers with sure weapons of defense, and as they used them faithfully and with confidence, not only was the enemy disarmed but one certain result followed: the healing of the condition, whatever it claimed to be.
As followers of the Christ, the ever-present Truth, revealed in Christian Science, we too must keep our weapons ready, for the enemy of rumor and lying innuendo is indeed busy in our midst today. Planning to undermine and destroy trust and confidence, to overthrow and to defeat the purposes of good, it whispers its malicious propaganda into the world consciousness. The ignorant and unalert accept these suggestions as their own thoughts and pass them on to others. Especially should we be watchful when these suggestions relate to those in public office, men burdened with the responsibility of affairs of state. Grave decisions, affecting the lives of many, must be made by them, and we need to know that Mind is fulfilling through them the divine purposes of good alone. We need to destroy, by the spoken word or unspoken right thought, the rumor which seeks to attach itself to their name and work.
Evil suggestion, which proceeds from the carnal mind, has no Mind to govern it; it has no intelligence to direct it, no life to sustain it. Because it springs from hate, which is unreal, it has neither power nor purpose, for Love is the only power. Therefore it cannot overthrow or subvert the laws of divine Principle; it cannot undermine the wise enactments of infinite Mind or interfere with the Life of man, which is God Himself. Its seeming power is annulled and its would-be purpose circumvented by the omnipotence and wisdom of infinite Love. Because God is impervious to hate or malice, so also is man, His image and likeness; because God is untouched by lies and knows nothing but Himself and His reflection, so man, the expression of Truth, can neither know nor accept an error in consciousness. These are some of the true thoughts with which we may arm ourselves as opponents of evil propaganda and as allies of the right and true.
