In striving recently to overcome a physical difficulty which...
In striving recently to overcome a physical difficulty which seemed stubborn and unyielding. I was led to the remembrance of David in his meeting with Goliath. Before going out to meet Goliath, David audibly recalled how God had delivered him "out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear," and he said, "He will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine." Gaining courage from the recollection of these former experiences, he went out unafraid to meet the aggressive, boastful, dominating claims of the enemy, and, as related in I Samuel, the nothingness of the aggressive, boastful domination was demonstrated. Recalling this, I began to enumerate the many times I had been delivered, through the application of Christian Science, "out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear."
To begin with I recalled the healing of extreme shyness which at times had become so aggravated as to border on mental derangement, so that I had been afraid of losing my sanity. Then followed the recollection of a healing of chronic constipation, a quick healing of ptomaine poisoning while I was performing my work as First Reader, and at another time of ptomaine poisoning from which I seemed to be passing on; healings of bronchial pneumonia, partial paralysis lasting several hours, and influenza; complete protection in an automobile accident; and the harmonious working out of an unhappy business connection which had fallen to me by inheritance, and to which, one of the best attorneys in our city had told me, I was tied hand and foot and absolutely helpless to do anything about it. By applying Christian Science to this problem, and holding to a passage in Psalms that God does not require needless sacrifice, I stepped out free and without having to sacrifice anything good. I took with me all that belonged to me.
As I enumerated these experiences of healing and protection, my sense of gratitude became so keen that the stubborn problem I had been trying to solve had, in the meantime, entirely disappeared.
