God Alone Heals

On page 169 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy there is a marginal heading which reads, "Mind the only healer." Under this heading appears the sentence, "Only the action of Truth, Life, and Love can give harmony." And the master Christian, Jesus of Nazareth, when recognizing the scientific fact that God alone heals, said, "I do nothing of myself." It should, therefore, be clear that God, not the practitioner, heals. It is Truth which heals, and not the individual who declares the truth.

Because of the many erroneous systems of mental healing operating in the world—systems which place great stress on the personality and ability of the practitioner—students of Christian Science must guard against the temptation to think that the individual of himself has power to heal.

The scientific fact that God, without the slightest help from the practitioner, heals, does not in any way preclude the necessity for the mental process of affirming the truth and denying error which we call treatment. Instead, the recognition and practice of this all-important fact—the ever-present power of God—make the process of treatment more natural and more successful.
