Four years ago Christian Science was presented to me...
Four years ago Christian Science was presented to me by letters which I received regularly from my parents. However, I did not take much notice of it at that time, for I was in good health and had no special difficulties except some very restless moments. However, I had to learn my lesson before I could have the privilege of coming to the wonderful truth taught by Christian Science.
My business, which had been quite good, gradually became bad, and to regain the lost ground I turned to my friends for help. This was immediately given, and two very good positions were promised me. The first job which I tried to get hold of slipped out of my hands through unexpected circumstances. The other position, too, could not be had, although I had been assured that I would obtain it. These experiences made me think, and as at that time my sources of supply were nearly exhausted, I began automatically to read the letters of my parents, and also "No and Yes" by Mary Baker Eddy.
At that time I was a heavy smoker and drank quite a lot of alcohol, although I did not like it at all and I disliked myself very much after using it. In a very short time I came to the conclusion that I was on the wrong track, Some glimpses of Truth were revealed to me, which resulted in the following decision: that I had to do my best in the position which I held at that time, for my only real business was my Father's business, and if I did not do my work well, I could never manage a better job. The result of this thinking came surprisingly quickly. One month later a very nice position was offered me by telephone from an unthought-of source and was entirely in line with my desires. In the meanwhile the smoking habit left me when I read the passage in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 454), "It need not be added that the use of tobacco or intoxicating drinks is not in harmony with Christian Science;" and I did not use any more alcohol. My friends were quite surprised about the changes and supposed that it had cost me a lot of will power to overcome those habits. I was very grateful that I could deny this.
