Though twenty-three years have passed since I first saw...
Though twenty-three years have passed since I first saw the healing effects of Christian Science in the lives of others, and felt its healing touch myself, I have never before written my testimony. I have benefited constantly from the testimonies of others which are published in the Journal and Sentinel.
When I was about thirteen years of age I became certain that there is a God, and I desired to live in touch with Him. But I did not understand at that time that sickness has no more legitimate place in God's kingdom than has sin, and must be eliminated from human consciousness as being foreign to Him. I therefore passed through eight or nine years clouded by disease from which there seemed to be no escape. After an attack of scarlet fever I developed pericarditis, and my mother was told by a doctor that great care would have to be taken of me, and that I should be unable to earn my living. I felt so weak that my life at a day school was a burden to me, and I cannot say I enjoyed my girlhood at all. The three years I spent at an art school were no better. Nervous headaches often condemned me to agony in a darkened room.
The World War brought trouble and anxiety to me as to others, and I had a severe nervous breakdown, with two nurses in attendance. The nerve specialist whom my parents consulted said I would be liable to attacks of the same kind throughout my life. As soon, however, as I was better, I attempted to take a place in a school. I taught for a term in a boys' preparatory school. The work seemed a terrible strain, and I was glad when I was offered a post to care for two little girls in a private family. Even this seemed too much for me. But help was near, for I was working in a family of Christian Scientists.
