Loving Our Neighbor

Students of Christian Science are striving to conform their living and thinking to the teachings of the Master. They are endeavoring to let that Mind be in them "which was also in Christ Jesus." This task requires that one closely watch his thinking, replacing erroneous thoughts of hatred, malice, jealousy, criticism, which tend to make him sick and unhappy, with righteous and loving thoughts of joy, peace, good will, and compassion. Such thoughts as these are expressed in health, harmony, and peace of mind. One should rule unjust criticism out of his thinking and replace it with Christlike love for his fellow man. This will bring blessing for himself and others.

A lawyer once asked Jesus, "Which is the great commandment in the law?" The Master answered: "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets."

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, on page 467 of her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," asks the question, "What are the demands of the Science of Soul?" Answering, she says, "The first demand of this Science is, 'Thou shalt have no other gods before me.' " And she adds, in part, "This me is Spirit. Therefore the command means this: Thou shalt have no intelligence, no life, no substance, no truth, no love, but that which is spiritual;" and she also says, "It should be thoroughly understood that all men have one Mind, one God and Father, one Life, Truth, and Love."
