The Young Soldier

[Written Especially for Young People]

Today, perhaps more openly than ever, the young Christian Scientist is faced with the suggestion that evil is real, for it is rearing its head in many ugly manifestations which to human sense result in subjugation, death, deprivation, and loss of liberties. Rallying to the defense of their democratic ideals, certain countries have called many of their sons to the colors, to meet this threat to civilization. The young Christian Scientist has taken his place in the ranks of these armies.

With trust in the omnipotence of God, the sustaining infinite, and without hatred and personalization of evil, but with firm resolve, the true Christian Scientist will do his duty to God and to his country. In "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" Mrs. Eddy says (p. 222): "Mankind will be God-governed in proportion as God'sgovernment becomes apparent, the Golden Rule utilized, and the rights of man and the liberty of conscience held sacred. Meanwhile, they who name the name of Christian Science will assist in the holding of crime in check, will aid the ejection of error, will maintain law and order, and will cheerfully await the end—justice and judgment."

With these inspired words as a guide, the young Christian Scientist will not become confused as to what should or should not be done. He will rely on God to guide him and to sustain him. He will be obedient to the rules of Christian Science as laid down by Mrs. Eddy and found in the Church Manual, especially that paragraph relating to "Alertness to Duty" (Art. VIII, Sect. 6). He will protect himself against the beliefs of aggressive mental suggestion by walking closely with God, by his study of the textbooks and by daily reading the Lesson-Sermon, as given in the Christian Science Quarterly, by doing metaphysical work for himself, for the church, and for mankind, and by striving continuously to know the truth about government, universe, and man. By so doing he will remain calm in the knowledge of the true God.
