The rector of a church, as quoted in a recent issue, made several erroneous statements in his talk on Christian Science, which in fairness to your readers, should not be allowed to stand.

It is unfortunate that the gentleman should have accepted as correct the assertion that Mrs. Eddy's was a "synthetic teaching," borrowed from others, especially Phineas P. Quimby, whom he characterizes as Mrs. Eddy's "early teacher." Mr. Quimby was never her teacher; in fact, he was not a teacher at all, but a mesmeric healer. Mrs. Eddy's visit to him was merely an incident in her remarkable life.

The statement with regard to the Rev. James Wiggin is incorrect. On page 317 of "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany," Mrs. Eddy says: "I engaged Mr. Wiggin so as to avail myself of his criticisms of my statement of Christian Science, which criticisms would enable me to explain more clearly the points that might seem ambiguous to the reader."
