Some time ago I had an ailment which caused me much pain and discomfort for several days. One afternoon I returned home to prepare an early dinner previous to attending a lecture given in a near-by city, but before I could finish it I was forced to lie down. As I did so, I recounted my footsteps during this period of pain and discomfort to determine why I had not made my demonstration. Very quickly and clearly it came to me that it was through lack of study and consecrated application of the truth. I immediately determined to clear my thinking and to lift my thoughts preparatory to receiving the truth I was to hear at the lecture that evening. At each opportunity on our way to the lecture, and before the lecture started. I closed my eyes and repeated some statement of truth from the Bible and from our textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy.
While sitting in the church before the lecture started, I noticed this inscription on the wall: "He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions." I realized that this message was meant for me as well as those to whom it was spoken centuries ago. And within fifteen or twenty minutes after the lecture started I was entirely free.
On page 297 of our textbook Mrs. Eddy states, "Until belief becomes faith, and faith becomes spiritual understanding, human thought has little relation to the actual or divine." And again, on page 194 she says, "A change in human belief changes all the physical symptoms, and determines a case for better or for worse. When one's false belief is corrected, Truth sends a report of health over the body." Thus it is we realize that only through faith and spiritual understanding are we enabled to entertain the thoughts of truth that send "a report of health over the body."
