Demonstration

The question is sometimes asked, What is meant by the term "demonstration," as used in the practice of Christian Science? It is a fair question, for "demonstration" is a word that may be puzzling to the beginner who, heretofore, has used it only in the sense of making something known by visible means. The word "demonstrate" is derived from a Latin word demonstrare, meaning "to show"; and one definition of it is "to show outwardly or by sign; to give visible evidence of."

The healings performed by Jesus and the early Christians were called signs, because they confirmed the truth which he taught. The healings which today attend the practice of Christian Science give visible evidence that the power of God to heal is as available and operative today as it was two thousand years ago. The Apostle Paul said, "And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power."

Mary Baker Eddy in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," says (p. 4), "We reach the Science of Christianity through demonstration of the divine nature;" and again, on page 268 of "Miscellaneous Writings," she writes that "God's preparations for the sick are potions of His own qualities."
