The Work of the Sunday School
THE argument concerning the backwardness of so-called problem children cannot be accepted by the teacher in the Christian Science Sunday School. This argument comes from the evidence of the physical senses, which, so far as the real man is concerned, is false in every respect. Inharmony must be seen as impersonal, in order to be destroyed. If error seems to be manifested by individuals, this does not make it part of their real selfhood. God's children are spiritual, held in the uninterrupted harmony of Soul. God's presence cannot be invaded or disturbed. God is everywhere; error is nowhere.
In the Sunday school, as well as in every other activity of The Mother Church and its branches, we must learn to correct the false evidences of mortal mind with the truth of being, rejoicing that error is always a false claim, not the truth. The wise teacher turns definitely from personality, and uplifts his thought to seek a higher and holier understanding of God's presence and power, and of man in His image and likeness. He does not accept the belief of so-called problem children, but sets about to dissolve impersonal error with the understanding of divine Love.
Mrs. Eddy lovingly tells us in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 334), "You must find error to be nothing: then, and only then, do you handle it in Science." How contradictory to this direction it would be for us to believe that error belongs to the children in the Christian Science Sunday School! To accept the belief that error is personal would be to believe that there is more than one Mind. The teacher overcomes error by seeing all of God's little ones as embraced in the omnipotence of divine Mind, divine Love. As he recognizes, when difficulties arise, that his part is to resist error, not person, he will see clearly the nothingness of evil and the allness of God. If the teacher, instead of becoming discouraged or impatient with the children, will lift his thought to divine Love and realize the true relationship which forever exists between God and man, he will help to unloose the fetters of materiality and lead the children to the understanding and demonstration of Truth and Love.
